Making a Scatterplot when both variables are Continuous

First, make sure that your data are entered appropriately: your independent variable should be entered in a column to the left of your dependent variable. The screenshot below shows an example for the fish diversity data from Chapter 3 of the Online Stats Manual.

To make your scatterplot, first click and drag to highlight the two columns and column headings with your data.

Next go to the Insert tab, choose the Chart type Scatter, and click on the Chart with data points but no lines (circled in red below). You should see a graph like the one in the screenshot below.

IMPORTANT: Use these directions to adjust the format of your graph - your graph is not very meaningful until you’ve added proper formatting, such as axis labels, etc.

Once your graph has been formatted and labeled, it should look something like this:
